CULTURAL QUARTERS Principles and Practice
Authored and edited by Simon Roodhouse

This book provides a conceptual context for cultural quarters which argues for clarity of purpose and discusses the principles of urban design and planning when applied to this activity. These issues are examined through case studies drawn from Sheffield, Wolverhampton, Newcastle, Belfast, Dublin and Vienna with a reference to Manchester. The studies include a description of the quarter, purpose, how it came about; management structures chosen for delivering the project and where possible an indication of costs, volume of activity and outputs. This is followed by a detailed analysis of Bolton Borough Council’s moves towards establishing a cultural quarter in the town centre, including references to funding models employed by the British Museum as well as the cultural quarter development in Birmingham. It is a single volume packed with detail that will be suitable for planners, economic development personnel, local authority staff and government agencies concerned with regeneration (particularly cultural regeneration), as well as the HE sector.

International Journal of Arts Management, volume nine, number three, spring 2007
Jennifer Radbourne

"Its strengths are the practical nature of the text, providing a timely study and excellent examples for local and municipal governments, urban planners, artists, arts managers and practitioners in creative industries of how several cultural quarters or cultural precincts have been established and sustained. The cases are excellent: a well-written, exhaustive, rich, representative and diverse. It is hard not to enjoy each one, from development to conclusion. Intellectually the reader is invited to reflect on each of the scenarios for required to create and sustain a cultural
quarter. At the same time, the reader can extend his or understanding of cultural concepts and industries and be assured of the place of Culture in a sophisticated or depressed community. The volume represents a huge contribution to the literature on cultural quarters and cities in the United Kingdom and elsewhere in"

"This is essentially a book very much geared towards practice. Nonetheless, it is useful to know that such a good detailed a reference source exists for anyone involved in this type of work especially through urban -regeneration
type projects in whatever country."
